Just to clarify for some readers, “6G” pertains to a future cellular network that is expected to deliver quicker and more dependable wireless internet access to more users, not the image quality of a display or a camera. (That’s where “8K” is relevant.)
Here are Trump’s complete on-air comments regarding the subject, prior to moving on:
So we’re into 6G now, wow. 5G — I was a pioneer in 5G, making that happen, and now we’re progressing to 6. What does that do, give you a clearer look into someone’s skin? See how flawless it is. I preferred the cameras from earlier days. They had a certain charm. Now they reveal every little detail, let’s see Michael, you’re fit, you won’t… but I tell you… so six is arriving, huh? It’s on its way. Does it ever stop? And what comes next? You’ll be into seven, right? Before six becomes outdated, you’ll be hitting seven.
Did Trump at least grasp what 6G stood for back in 2019 when he expressed his desire for it “as soon as possible” or fear that the US might get “left behind”? That’s uncertain, but this is the same individual who asserts that other nations bear his tariffs instead of us in the United States, the same individual who claimed the Moon was a section of Mars, the same individual promoting a “Made in the USA” phone that will not be manufactured in the USA, and perhaps most pertinently to this narrative, the individual who believed Apple could assist him in expanding 5G within the US. The list continues indefinitely.
If you’re curious whether Trump was truly “a leader on 5G,” his most significant contributions are: fast-tracking a T-Mobile merger with Sprint that fell short of its commitments; appointing FCC commissioners who worked to eliminate net neutrality and generally allowed the carriers to operate unchecked; granting cellular carriers additional spectrum to profit from; and barring certain Chinese telecommunications gear from being incorporated into US 5G networks.
Most recently, Trump’s FCC is dismantling the broadband nutrition labels specifically created to shield consumers from hidden charges and deceptive marketing.
