Google is not yet prepared to substitute Assistant with Gemini on Android devices. The company announced on Friday that it will “continue our efforts to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices throughout 2026,” rather than its initial plans to implement the change by the close of 2025.

“We are revising our formerly stated timeline to ensure we provide a seamless transition,” Google states. After the switch from Google Assistant is finalized, users will lose access to the voice assistant on devices that satisfy the minimum requirements to operate Gemini. Additionally, downloading the Google Assistant app will no longer be possible for users.

This year, Google made progress toward substituting Assistant with Gemini on Android by granting users the capability to make phone calls, set timers, and send messages via Gemini without activating Gemini Apps Activity. This modification enables individuals to engage Gemini’s assistant-like features while opting out of having their interactions utilized for AI training.
