Google appears to be counting on luxury fashion labels to make AI smart glasses popular.

Google is reportedly collaborating with Gucci to create a pair of AI smart glasses fashionable enough for people to genuinely desire to wear them. According to Reuters, the parent company of Gucci, Kering, aims to launch the glasses in 2027.
Google’s initial Android XR glasses, “Project Aura,” are anticipated to debut this year. They showcase a similar design to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, featuring thick, black plastic frames. This will mark Google’s second attempt at smart glasses, following the notorious failure of Google Glass more than a decade ago.
Last year, Google also revealed glasses collaborations with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, but those brands lack the high-profile status of Gucci. In contrast to numerous other tech items, smart glasses must possess style to succeed, and tying up with a luxury brand like Gucci may assist Google in rivaling the Meta Ray-Ban series. Collaborations with fashion houses also enable technology firms to label their glasses differently — as Snap CEO Evan Spiegel recently mentioned, “the Meta brand, I believe, isn’t something individuals wish to have close to their face.”
