Google is not fully prepared to substitute Assistant with Gemini on Android devices. The company announced on Friday that it will “continue our work to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices into 2026,” instead of its initial plans to make the transition by the end of 2025.

“We’re revising our previously stated timeline to ensure a seamless transition,” Google states. Once the switch from Google Assistant is completed, users will no longer have access to the voice assistant on devices that fulfill the minimum specifications to operate Gemini. Users will also be unable to download the Google Assistant app.

This year, Google initiated actions toward replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android by enabling users to make phone calls, set timers, and send messages through Gemini without Gemini Apps Activity actively enabled. This change permits users to utilize Gemini’s assistant-like functions while opting not to have their interactions used for AI learning.
