Whether you’re using live translate or just looking up a single line, Google says the Gemini-powered update should improve results. Google Translate now appears better at catching linguistic nuance, including idioms and regional slang. Google points to the phrase “stealing my thunder,” which would make no sense if rendered word-for-word in other languages. The updated model, also available in the search translation interface, covers more than 70 languages.
Earlier this year Google introduced language-learning tools that take a cue from apps like Duolingo. You can set your proficiency level and specify whether you want help with travel phrases or everyday conversation. The app uses that information to build customized listening and speaking exercises.
This major update makes Translate pickier about pronunciation. Google says you’ll receive more feedback and tips based on your spoken responses in the lessons. The app will also record how often you finish practice sessions and display a daily streak.
If seeing your numbers climb motivates you, this update is designed for that. Practice mode is also rolling out to nearly 20 additional countries, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
