President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell should proceed, disregarding a Republican senator’s promise to obstruct Trump’s choice for the new Fed chair unless the inquiry is halted.

U.S. Attorney for Washington Jeanine Pirro, who is at the forefront of the unusual investigation regarding the central bank chairman, should “bring it to conclusion and discover,” Trump remarked to reporters in the Oval Office.

The president was queried about whether Pirro should give up her pursuit given that Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., announced on Friday his intention to oppose any new Fed candidate until the investigation of Powell is fully resolved.

Tillis established this boundary on the same day that Trump, following a lengthy selection process, named Kevin Warsh as his nominee to replace Powell as Fed chair.

Tillis is a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, comprising 13 Republicans and 11 Democrats. Should Tillis align with all Democrats on the committee against Warsh, he may create a deadlock that blocks the nominee from reaching a full Senate vote.

Powell had disclosed on January 11 that he was under criminal investigation.

This announcement followed months of Trump and his supporters consistently criticizing Powell for not reducing interest rates as swiftly or steeply as the president desires.

Powell accused the administration of threatening him with legal action as the Fed, despite Trump’s urging, has made its rate-setting choices “based on our best evaluation of what will benefit the public, rather than catering to the President’s wishes.”

CNBC revealed on Wednesday that the Federal Reserve has yet to comply with grand jury subpoenas related to Pirro’s investigation.

Trump has frequently implied that the protracted, multibillion-dollar refurbishment of the Fed’s Washington headquarters involves either incompetence or misconduct by Powell.

“It’s either severe incompetence or some form of embezzlement, kickbacks. I’m not sure what it is,” Trump remarked during his comments in the Oval Office on Monday.

“But Jeanine Pirro is remarkable, and she’ll uncover the truth,” he added.

The Fed has defended its renovation initiatives, stating they will ultimately lower costs for the central bank, while attempting to justify the rising expenses. Powell’s term concludes in May.
