is a senior journalist focused on technology, gaming, and more. He started with The Verge in 2019 after nearly two years at Techmeme.

Sebastiaan de With, recognized for his contributions to apps such as Halide, Kino, and Orion as the co-founder of Lux, is set to join Apple’s design team, he disclosed today. “Thrilled to collaborate with the absolute best team globally on my preferred products,” de With stated in his announcement.

de With is widely recognized for his in-depth analyses of Apple’s iPhone cameras — I was an enthusiastic follower of his review on the iPhone 16E’s camera (which he referred to as a “vibe”), and on the flip side, his review of the iPhone 17 Pro camera makes for a captivating read, as well. Lux’s applications also express strong perspectives, such as the Process Zero mode in the iPhone camera application Halide and the professional features found in the Kino video capture application.

Lux’s other co-founder, Ben Sandofsky, shared this comment on Reddit:

I’ve never felt more positive about the future of Lux and Halide. Today, we unveiled the public preview of Halide Mark III, and the feedback has exceeded our expectations.

As mentioned in our announcement today, we collaborated with the legendary team at The Iconfactory on Mark III. Additionally, we are excited to work alongside the acclaimed colorist Cullen Kelly on the new aesthetics in Mark III.

A decade ago, I established Halide, and for ten years, I oversaw the product development, managed the business, and coded nearly everything. Except for the paywall. I detest developing payment interfaces. Nevertheless, I constructed everything else, and design was consistently a collaborative effort.

In summary, Halide is not going anywhere. This has been my primary occupation since 2019, and I can’t envision doing anything else.

de With and Apple did not respond promptly to a request for comment.

de With has collaborated with Apple in the past; on his personal site, he states that he has engaged in “design projects for various firms including Apple, where I contributed to iCloud / MobileMe and the Find My applications.”
