On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled extensive proposals aimed at tightening immigration regulations, which include a halt on migration from “Third World Countries” and the revocation of all federal benefits and subsidies to “noncitizens” residing in the nation.
In two posts on Truth Social late Thursday night, Trump stated he would “permanently suspend migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to completely recover,” without clarifying what constitutes a “third world” country. The phrase generally refers to nations with higher poverty levels and economic volatility.
The president disclosed intentions to cancel “millions” of admissions set by his predecessor Joe Biden and to eliminate “anyone who does not benefit the United States or who is not capable of loving our Country.”
Trump further stated he intends to abolish all federal benefits and subsidies for noncitizens, “denaturalize migrants who disrupt domestic peace,” and deport any foreign individual he labeled as a “public charge, security threat, or incompatible with Western Civilization.”
These remarks followed the shooting of two National Guard members near the White House on Wednesday, resulting in one fatality a day later. Authorities indicated the assailant was an Afghan national.
Shortly after the incident, Joseph Edlow, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, mentioned in a post on X that the agency would evaluate every immigrant with a Green Card from a “country of concern.”
The agency also declared an immediate and indefinite halt on all immigration applications involving Afghan nationals.
Trump has actively pursued a stringent immigration policy since his return to the White House earlier this year. In June, he announced a sweeping travel ban affecting immigrants from 19 nations, including Afghanistan.
