BBC Verify has pinpointed video footage that seemingly depicts the initial moments of a fire at a high-rise public housing building in Hong Kong – illustrating how rapidly the flames engulfed the area.
The footage reveals a fire in Wang Cheong House, which aligns with the statement made by the deputy director of Hong Kong Fire Services, Derek Armstrong Chan, who identified the fire’s point of origin.
The individual who uploaded the video on the social media platform Threads mentioned hearing loud noises before observing the fire at 14:51 local time (06:51 GMT).
They noted that the first responders reached the scene six minutes afterward, at which point the flames had already extended to the fourth floor.
The inferno, which has traversed through seven tower blocks in the Tai Po area, has claimed the lives of at least 75 individuals, with nearly 300 still unaccounted for.
