U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Congressional Republicans to vote in favor of making public documents tied to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a notable shift from prior reluctance within his circle.
“House Republicans must vote to disclose the Epstein records, because we’re not hiding anything,” Trump stated in an extensive message on his Truth Social profile.
“And it’s time to move past this Democrat Hoax orchestrated by Radical Left Lunatics to distract from the Great Success of the Republican Party, including our recent Triumph over the Democrat ‘Shutdown’,” he continued.
The President further mentioned that the Department of Justice has already provided the public with “tens of thousands of documents” regarding Epstein, and that officials are investigating “various Democrat players,” like former President Bill Clinton and his ex-Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.
A spokesperson for Clinton did not immediately reply to a request for comments after Trump’s late-night message on Truth Social.
Trump’s remarks come amidst increasing scrutiny concerning his previous associations with Epstein, who died by apparent suicide in August 2019 after facing charges related to child sex trafficking.
The entire House of Representatives is about to vote on a proposal — championed by Republican representative Thomas Massie and Democrat Ro Khanna — calling for the release of criminal investigative files concerning Epstein, which is reportedly scheduled for Tuesday.
The DOJ had declined to publicly disclose the investigative documents, despite previous commitments from Attorney General Pam Bondi and other officials from the Trump administration.
However, a proposal in the House gathered sufficient backing, inclusive of support from Trump associates like Representatives Nancy Mace and Lauren Boebert, prompting a vote on the issue.
Former ally and Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also endorsed the proposal and criticized Trump’s hesitation to unveil additional Epstein case documents, causing a significant rift with the President over the weekend.
In his most recent post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that certain “members” of the Republican Party were being “exploited,” asserting that the party needed to “get BACK ON POINT.”
In a distinct post late Sunday, Trump singled out Greene, labeling her a “Traitor.” On Saturday, Greene had accused the president of targeting her as part of efforts to “set an example” of her and “intimidate other Republicans” ahead of the House vote on the Epstein files.
Trump has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s prolonged abuse of underage individuals and has proclaimed that their relationship soured in the early 2000s.
However, the House Oversight Committee last week disclosed thousands of emails indicating communications among Epstein and others discussing Trump. Nevertheless, in these emails, Epstein did not specifically accuse Trump of any illegal actions.
Clarification: This article has been revised to clarify that reports indicate the vote is anticipated for Tuesday, but it has not yet been officially arranged.
