Denmark has revealed an additional $4.2bn (£3.2bn) in defence expenditures aimed at enhancing security in Greenland as well as in the Arctic and North Atlantic areas.
Furthermore, $4.5bn will be allocated for the acquisition of 16 additional F-35 fighter jets from the United States, increasing its total fleet to 43 advanced aircraft.
“With this… agreement, we greatly enhance the capabilities of the Danish Armed Forces in this area,” stated Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in a Friday announcement.
This increase in defence comes after US President Donald Trump has voiced his interest in acquiring Greenland, claiming that the vast Arctic territory – which is under Danish control – is “vital” for national and economic security.
Denmark collaborated with the governments of Greenland and the Faroe Islands to develop the new defence strategy.
The package will include the purchase of two new Arctic vessels, maritime surveillance aircraft, drones, and early-warning radar systems.
Significantly, a new Arctic command center will be established in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, alongside a new military unit under the Joint Arctic Command.
“The role of the Armed Forces is to guarantee security throughout the Kingdom – and, when required, to protect Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark under the NATO umbrella across all domains,” remarked Chief of Defence, Michael Hyldgaard, to Danish public broadcaster DR, not specifying potential adversaries.
Additionally, funding will be designated for an undersea cable linking Greenland and Denmark.
The Danish defence ministry’s statement emphasizes deterrence and NATO commitments – yet it does not reference the United States or Russia.
Nevertheless, this all occurs amid worries regarding President Trump’s motives, as he has indicated his wishes to gain control of Greenland for security purposes and its abundant resources.
“I believe we will have it,” Trump stated in January concerning Greenland, adding that the island’s 57,000 inhabitants “desire to be with us.”
Since the Cold War, Greenland has housed a US radar installation and has been of significant strategic importance to Washington.
Although the island possesses considerable autonomy, it is still a part of the Danish realm.
Trump has suggested that the island is vital for military operations to monitor Chinese and Russian naval vessels, which he asserts are “everywhere”.
Greenland is situated along the most direct path from North America to Europe, which adds to its strategic significance for the United States. It also hosts a large American space facility.
Additionally, it is strategically positioned between North America and Russia.
In recent years, there has been heightened interest in Greenland’s natural resources, particularly in mining rare earth elements, uranium, and iron.
