After approximately 40 years with Microsoft, Xbox leader and CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer is departing from the company, alongside Xbox president Sarah Bond. Spencer’s retirement was revealed in a memo from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on February 20th, indicating, “Last year, Phil Spencer decided to retire from the organization, and since then we’ve been discussing succession strategies.”
Last summer, Microsoft had addressed speculations regarding Spencer’s retirement, asserting at that time that he was “not retiring anytime soon.” Asha Sharma, currently president of Microsoft’s CoreAI, is stepping into Spencer’s previous position as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, while Matt Booty is being elevated to EVP and chief content officer.
