The BBC has made its first visit to Iran since the security forces’ crackdown on widespread anti-government demonstrations last month.

Iran’s authorities are commemorating 47 years since the Islamic Revolution, with decorations and flags adorning the streets of Tehran – yet the anguish remains intense following the extraordinary violence employed to suppress the protests.

Human rights advocates have stated they have verified the deaths of at least 6,400 demonstrators, but cautioned that the ultimate casualty number may be significantly higher.

The BBC’s principal international correspondent Lyse Doucet is reporting from Tehran under the stipulation that none of her content is utilized by the BBC’s Persian Service. These limitations are imposed on all international media entities functioning in Iran.
