The Seattle Seahawks delivered a remarkable defensive performance to defeat the New England Patriots and secure their second Super Bowl championship.
Two of the NFL’s top defenses faced off in Sunday’s finale, with the Seahawks decisively emerging victorious, winning 29-13 at Levi’s Stadium.
It was a display of defense for the ages, and Briton Aden Durde made an essential contribution, making history as the first overseas coach to triumph in America’s marquee game.
Seattle’s 46-year-old defensive coordinator has assembled the most feared defense in the NFL, known as ‘the Dark Side’, and they demonstrated their prowess on American football’s grandest stage in Santa Clara, California.
New England’s sophomore quarterback Drake Maye narrowly missed securing the season’s Most Valuable Player award, but he was constrained by the Seahawks, who recorded six sacks, forced three turnovers, and scored a defensive touchdown.
After Seattle took a 9-0 lead at halftime, Maye’s initial turnover led to the game’s first touchdown for tight end AJ Barner early in the fourth quarter.
Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu then returned an interception for a 45-yard touchdown, while Jason Meyers set a record with five field goals, denying the Patriots a historic seventh Super Bowl victory.
“We were the superior team; we’re the champions. We supported one another and had faith in each other,” said Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald in an interview with NBC.
“We embraced our dark side tonight; our players made it happen. They brought it to life and we succeeded in the game.”

How the Seahawks contained MVP contender Maye
The majority of the 70,823 spectators appeared to support Seattle, who were the slight favorites heading into the match, and their victory signifies that quarterback Sam Darnold has finalized his comeback narrative after being dismissed as a starting NFL quarterback.
The Seahawks represent Darnold’s fifth team over his eight-year career – and the third in as many years – but in his debut season with the Seahawks, the former third overall pick has achieved the sport’s most prestigious accomplishment.
The 28-year-old has been haunted by a remark he made during a challenging outing against the Patriots in 2019, where he famously stated, “I’m seeing ghosts,” but Darnold has now put those fears to rest.
In contrast, it was Maye who experienced a nightmare against the swift, aggressive defense that Durde and coach Macdonald have developed during their two seasons together in Seattle.
The depth of their threat was evident as Devon Witherspoon managed to achieve a sack from cornerback. He, Derick Hall, and Rylie Mills combined for only 2.5 sacks throughout the season but all three managed to reach Maye in the first half.
The Patriots managed merely four first downs before halftime and accumulated 52 yards overall. Some unkind individuals on social media even jested that Bad Bunny gained more yards during his halftime performance.
Hall’s second sack forced a fumble, which Byron Murphy recovered, and he too sacked Maye twice as the Dark Side etched themselves into Seattle’s history alongside the Legion of Boom, the defense that guided the Seahawks to their previous Super Bowl triumph in 2014.
“My teammates and coaches had faith in me,” Darnold expressed to NBC. “From the initial training camp, we showed up every day ready to work. A big thanks to our offensive line for their contributions during the game. But I also need to give credit to our defense.
“We accomplished it. This journey with these guys has been incredibly special. A lot of hard work has gone into this, and we did it.”

Patriots and Vrabel denied historic triumph
New England competed in their first Super Bowl since 2019 following the exit of iconic quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick.
The duo directed the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, equaling the NFL record held by the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Mike Vrabel participating in three of those victories.
After two consecutive 4-13 seasons, the former linebacker returned to New England as head coach and has revitalized the roster, steering the Patriots to a record-extending 12th Super Bowl appearance.
Vrabel aspired to be the first individual to win a Super Bowl as both a player and head coach with the same organization, while Maye sought to be the youngest quarterback to secure the prestigious title.
In addition to boasting the league’s highest pass completion percentage this season, Maye impressed with his capability to evade pressure and scramble effectively.
Nevertheless, the Seahawks proved insurmountable, as New England struggled to establish their rushing attack or include star receiver Stefon Diggs in the action.
Maye gave the Patriots a glimmer of hope when he connected with Mack Hollins for a touchdown that narrowed the score to 19-7, but he was intercepted on the next two drives, allowing Seattle to convert Rhamondre Stevenson’s late touchdown into a mere consolation.
