An anticipated update could pave the way for voice-activated third-party AI applications.

CarPlay users might soon have the option to utilize their preferred chatbot in place of Siri. As Bloomberg mentions, Apple is progressing towards supporting CarPlay voice-controlled applications from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others. Previously, users wishing to engage third-party chatbots while driving needed to rely on their iPhone, but soon they may directly communicate with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini within CarPlay.
Nonetheless, Apple reportedly “will not permit users to substitute the Siri button on CarPlay or the invocation phrase that activates the service.” Thus, users must manually launch their favored chatbot application. Developers, however, will have the option to configure their apps to initiate voice mode upon opening, potentially enhancing the user experience.
According to Bloomberg, the integration of third-party chatbots into CarPlay might commence “in the upcoming months,” although no official confirmation has been made yet. This suggested update follows Apple’s announcement last month that Google Gemini will enhance an updated version of Siri, which is expected to arrive later this year.
