TikTok remains unavailable, here are the most recent updates

Over a day after the commencement of issues with TikTok, TikTok USDS reports that the challenges are due to a power supply failure at a data center and following a sequence of system failures.

Beginning in the early hours of Sunday, TikTok’s newly acquired US division experienced dysfunction shortly after Oracle & Co took over. The For You page algorithm is now erratic, while aspects like comments are either failing to load or are slow, and many users are finding it nearly impossible to upload new videos.

Speculations regarding censorship directed at anti-ICE protests or attempts to stifle conversations about Jeffrey Epstein seem to be unfounded (even the California governor is sharing incorrect information now), amidst difficulties hindering access to various videos and messages on the platform through Monday night.

There are claims that TikTok is banning the term “Epstein” in direct messages, but this is not entirely accurate.

While tweets from random individuals, the governor of California, and PopBase asserted that TikTok US has restricted “Epstein” in DMs, testing on our part revealed that its messaging feature blocks many benign single-word communications, such as “test.” However, utilizing the name of the convicted sex offender in a complete sentence passes through unaffected.

TikTok has stated that an outage in power supply is causing persistent problems and interruptions that initiated in the US early Sunday morning. In a communication to The Verge, TikTok USDS representative Jamie Favazza referenced a statement released on the venture’s newly established X account, indicating that the firm has been “endeavoring to restore our services post a power outage at a U.S. data center affecting TikTok and other applications we manage.”

On Sunday, numerous users in the US, including some here at The Verge, reported an inability to upload videos to TikTok or view most recent videos, even those successfully uploaded by users from outside the US. Others indicated that their algorithm seemed to have “reset,” though it’s uncertain if this is related to the power interruption as well.
