The second generation of Beats earbuds ranks among the finest options for workouts.

Finding high-quality workout earbuds has become increasingly challenging lately if you prefer an open-style clip bud. Firms seem to be diverting attention away from them or exiting the market entirely, as seen with Jabra’s exit at the close of 2024. Fortunately, some of the top choices for workout earbuds — the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 — remain available and were updated at the start of this year. For this Cyber Monday, they are discounted at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for $199.95 ($50 off), almost matching their lowest price ever.
The inaugural Powerbeats Pro were my preferred choice during my training for a half-marathon prior to the pandemic. The chief reason was their ear hook structure, which curls around the ear’s back, ensuring they stay securely in place. Whether I was hitting the streets, navigating trails, or performing sprint intervals, I never had to worry about them dislodging. The Pro 2 enhances this design with more adaptable and sturdier ear hooks that deliver a perfect fit and can endure potential rough use. Those who wear spectacles may find the hooks to be uncomfortable, but I discovered that once I learned the proper placement, it wasn’t a concern.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 also include heart rate monitoring — a feature present even before Apple’s latest AirPods Pro 3. For individuals without an Apple Watch or those who prefer a chest strap, it presents a useful alternative, particularly as I found it to be quite accurate during my assessments. The heart rate sensors can integrate with Apple Fitness (added post-launch) and various third-party applications, functioning seamlessly with both Apple and Android devices — a distinct advantage of the Beats brand compared to Apple.
Audio quality with the Powerbeats Pro 2 is commendable, delivering sufficient driving bass that we desire for workout sessions. The active noise cancellation effectively manages loud surroundings, and they function excellently for phone calls with noise suppression that effectively reduces wind noise.
While the included carrying case is considerably smaller than its predecessor, it remains larger than the cases supplied with many current earbuds due to the space needed for the ear hooks. However, this time it also supports wireless charging, a feature that was notably absent in the original Powerbeats Pro.
For those in search of new workout earbuds, the Powerbeats Pro 2 represent an outstanding option, and their discounted price during Cyber Monday offers excellent value.
