The eagerly anticipated feature of Housing in World of Warcraft is set to come with a price. In addition to your regular subscription and the cost of the Midnight expansion, some Housing items will demand a fresh in-game currency known as “Hearthsteel” that players will need to purchase with real currency. World of Warcraft already features hundreds of different currencies, and at one stage, the game’s primary currency, gold, was valued higher than the Venezuelan bolivar.
Blizzard stated in its blog post regarding Hearthsteel that it will strictly be used for Housing, excluding the Trading Post, mounts, or other in-game goods. Blizzard also noted that not all Housing items will necessitate Hearthsteel:
“The vast majority of Housing items are (and will continue to be) earnable in-game. Only a minor percentage is available for purchase from the shop. Comparing this number against collectibles such as mounts is a useful metric, with over a thousand mounts available in-game and only a few dozen sold in the shop.”
