Democrats achieved a complete victory in the three largest competitive elections in the United States on Tuesday evening.
The candidates victorious include Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim who identifies as a democratic socialist and is projected to become the next mayor of New York City, as reported by NBC News.
In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill is anticipated to be the next governor.
And in Virginia, Abigail Spanberger is set to become the state’s first female governor, while her fellow Democrat Jay Jones is predicted to win against incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, according to NBC News projections.
In California, voters accepted Proposition 50, a constitutional change that permits the state to adopt a new map for U.S. House districts favoring Democrats.
In Pennsylvania, voters retained three incumbent Democrats on the state Supreme Court, maintaining their party’s 5-2 dominance, as projected by NBC News.
Even prior to the final results of the races, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, hailed the results as a significant backlash against President Donald Trump, a Republican.
Trump, in a social media update, claimed that unnamed “pollsters” concluded that the Republicans’ defeat on Tuesday was due to his absence from the ballots, coupled with the ongoing federal government shutdown that commenced on Oct. 1.
Schumer, who did not endorse Mamdani prior to Election Day, stated, “The results from tonight are a rejection of the Trump agenda.”
“The harshness, disorder, and avarice that characterize MAGA radicalism and are driving up costs were definitively turned down by the American populace,” Schumer remarked.
Schumer expressed that it was “an excellent evening for Democrats and our efforts to decrease costs, enhance healthcare, and strive for a better future for American families.”
“If Republicans wish to continue following Donald Trump into the depths of chaos, let them,” Schumer said. “The rest of America is progressing.”
Jones, projected victor of the Virginia attorney general’s race, unlike the other Democrats who had considerable victories was not considered a strong favorite prior to the event.
Jones’ chances in the race appeared precarious in October after the revelation of text messages he sent in 2022 that revealed his wishes to shoot then-state House Speaker Todd Gilbert, a Republican.
