Wander down the Infinite Corridor these days and you’ll discover an impressive new area, centrally located on the first floor of Building 11. Featuring vivid blue seating units, orange highlights, and an attention-grabbing design, it resembles a high-tech space station, modern and stylish—but also inviting and playful.
This is the latest location for the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC). While the layout might be unexpected, the establishment of the center is no surprise whatsoever. It’s merely another testament to MIT’s continuous innovation in enhancing student advising.
The MIT journey is unique for each individual, and the UAC was established in 2023 with that perspective, providing tailored support to assist undergraduates in realizing their complete potential. The new center consolidates the individuals and programs committed to guiding them through MIT, delivering advice that’s both customized and forward-thinking, with a focus on recognizing students who may require assistance and reaching out to them promptly.
The 5,000-square-foot facility, crafted by Merge Architects in Boston, embodies the demands of our students, who contributed suggestions on lighting (natural), seating (cozy), and versatile spaces that can accommodate everything from private discussions to larger gatherings.
I don’t need to remind you all that thriving at MIT involves more than just being exceptionally intelligent. UAC advisors assist students in establishing objectives, organizing their time, and fostering connections with faculty. They also guide students through what’s often referred to as the “hidden curriculum”—the unspoken norms and values of academia. After selecting their majors, students are paired with a faculty advisor, but that doesn’t imply their UAC advisors withdraw—these relationships persist throughout all four years, delivering
a sense of continuity and support.
Already, the new center is frequently utilized for consultations, study gatherings, and spontaneous visits to grab a quick snack and connect with friends. It’s much more than a mere physical enhancement—it’s a representation of our dedication to continuously reinforcing advising resources for every student, from orientation until the moment they finally receive their Brass Rats.
