The advancement of Chinese technology firms across various levels is “extraordinary,” OpenAI’s Sam Altman conveyed to CNBC, highlighting “numerous areas,” particularly in AI.
Altman’s remarks arise as China competes with the U.S. to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) — wherein AI equates to human capabilities — and to implement the technology throughout society.
The pace of Chinese advancement is “incredibly swift,” he noted. In certain domains, Chinese tech firms are at the forefront, while in others, they are trailing, Altman remarked.
OpenAI has been striving to establish revenue channels as it aims to ensure a pathway to profitability for investors who have invested about $70 billion into the company, based on data from deal-tracking platform Dealroom. The company is looking to finalize a $100 billion fundraising initiative, sources informed CNBC.
Advertisements within ChatGPT is one route the firm is investigating.
“I believe there’s still some tasks to accomplish to determine the ideal ad format that will be the most effective,” Altman stated, noting that the plans are in preliminary phases.
“The advertisements I’ve personally enjoyed the most in recent years from tech [companies] have been these sort of Instagram-style ads where you stumble upon something novel that you might genuinely appreciate and otherwise wouldn’t have discovered,” he expressed. “I believe we have a genuine opportunity to advance in that direction with ads in ChatGPT.”
