Last month, Apple TV premiered a teaser for the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, part of Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse, which brought Godzilla, King Kong, and other monsters (kaiju) created by Toho Co., Ltd into a single continuity. The short teaser only offered a quick look at the hinted-at new mythical Titan menacing humanity. The full trailer has now arrived and fills that gap: the threat is a massive tentacled sea creature named Titan X—and only Kong and Godzilla appear capable of confronting it.
(Spoilers for Season 1 below.)
As previously reported, season one picked up the storyline from 2014’s Godzilla, notably the origin of Project Monarch, a clandestine outfit founded in the 1950s to study Godzilla and other kaiju after nuclear attempts failed to eliminate him. In the S1 finale, Godzilla repels an Ion Dragon, sending it through a rift back to the Hollow Earth, and Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) appears to sacrifice himself to save his team. According to the official Season 2 synopsis:
Season two will resume with the fate of Monarch—and the world—hanging in the balance. The dramatic saga uncovers buried truths that bring our heroes (and villains) back together on Kong’s Skull Island, and introduces a mysterious coastal village where a mythical Titan rises from the ocean. The repercussions of past events ripple into the present day, blurring the lines between family, friend and foe—all while the threat of a titan event looms.
Alongside Kurt Russell, returning cast members include Wyatt Russell (Kurt’s son) as the younger Shaw; Anna Sawai as Cate Randa; Kiersey Clemons as May; Ren Watabe as Kentaro Randa; Joe Tippett as Tim; Elisa Lasowski as Duvall; and Anders Holm as the younger Monarch researcher Bill Randa. Takehiro Hira, Amber Midthunder, Curtiss Cook, Cliff Curtis, Dominique Tipper, and Camilo Jiménez Varón will appear in S2 as guest stars.
