Last year, Microsoft disclosed it is developing a next-gen Xbox console in collaboration with AMD. Now, AMD suggests that this upcoming Xbox console, equipped with custom AMD technology, might debut in 2027.
“The development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox, which will feature an AMD semi-custom SoC, is advancing smoothly for a launch in 2027,” AMD CEO Lisa Su mentioned during a recent earnings call. This brief statement doesn’t definitively confirm Microsoft will reveal a new Xbox in 2027, but it indicates AMD is prepared to assist a launch at that time if Microsoft is also prepared.
A “strategic multi-year partnership” formed between Microsoft and AMD last year includes joint efforts to design silicon “for a range of devices — encompassing our next-gen Xbox consoles in homes and portable formats.” Furthermore, AMD and Microsoft are collaborating to develop the next iteration of Xbox Cloud Gaming infrastructure.
Microsoft has hinted that the next-gen Xbox may function as a hybrid console and PC, with the Xbox Ally devices laying the foundational work for this vision. “The next-gen console is going to offer an exceptionally premium, high-end curated experience,” stated Xbox president Sarah Bond in October.
Microsoft has not specified a release date for its next-gen Xbox, and documents that surfaced during the FTC v. Microsoft case initially suggested a possible 2028 launch. These documents no longer represent current intentions and mentioned a tailored AMD CPU along with a co-designed AMD GPU.
