Adobe has reversed its decision to discontinue Adobe Animate on March 1st. In an FAQ, the corporation now states that Animate will enter maintenance mode and that it intends to “continue providing access” to the application. Animate will continue to receive “security updates and bug resolutions” and will be available for “all users, both new and existing,” though it will not see any new functionalities.
Numerous creators voiced dissatisfaction following Adobe’s initial announcement of discontinuation on Monday (here’s a Wayback Machine link), and the software remains in use by creatives such as David Firth, the creator of the animated web series Salad Fingers. Adobe now asserts that “We are dedicated to ensuring that Animate users will always have access to their content, regardless of the application’s development status.”
An announcement email sent to Adobe Animate users about the discontinuation did “not align with our expectations and resulted in considerable confusion and distress within the community,” as stated by a Reddit post from an Adobe community team member, Mike Chambers.
Animate will be provided in maintenance mode “indefinitely” to “individuals, small businesses, and enterprise customers,” according to Adobe. Before this update, Adobe indicated that non-enterprise customers could use Animate and download content until March 1st, 2027, whereas enterprise clients had until March 1st, 2029.
