On Wednesday evening, OpenAI introduced an App Directory for users to explore all available tools and unveiled its SDK for developers to create innovative experiences operating within the chatbot’s interface. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated last month that “We are aiming to develop the essential functionalities you would anticipate for a comprehensive platform gradually,” and launching an app store is indeed a significant advancement in that regard.

Another modification is the renaming of the “connectors” that previously enabled users to extract data from other platforms (such as Google Drive or Dropbox) into ChatGPT, now referred to as apps as well. As detailed on a support page, chat connectors are now labeled “apps with file search,” deep research connectors are now “apps with deep research,” and synced connectors are now “apps with sync.” Additionally, it notes that apps might utilize information from Memory if enabled, and for Free, Plus, Go, and Pro ChatGPT users, OpenAI could employ information to refine its models provided the user has “improve the model for everyone” activated.

For a more dynamic experience, users can seek ChatGPT apps similar to those introduced in October for Spotify, Zillow, and additional services, which are now accessible in broader regions, including Spotify in ChatGPT, now available “in the UK, Switzerland, and across the EU.” New features consist of an Apple Music app that helps users discover music, create playlists, and manage their music libraries from within the chatbot, and DoorDash, which can convert “recipe ideas, meal planning, and weekly staples into a practical shopping cart” in the same window.

The clarity on how all these changes will assist OpenAI generate profits from its AI business is one detail yet to be elucidated. The announcement merely states “We are considering more monetization strategies over time, which could include digital goods, and we will provide updates as we gather insights from developers and users.”
