Rob Reiner’s son Nick taken into custody for homicide following the discovery of the director and his spouse deceased.

The child of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner has been apprehended and charged with murder after their bodies were discovered in their Los Angeles residence.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that Nick Reiner, aged 32, had been taken into custody without bail.

Sources informed CBS News, BBC’s US partner, that the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, discovered her parents with multiple stab wounds in their home on Sunday.

Rob Reiner is recognized for directing numerous classic films across various genres, such as When Harry Met Sally, This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery, and A Few Good Men.

Emergency services were summoned to deliver medical assistance at the Reiners’ Brentwood, California, residence around 15:38 local time (23:38 GMT) on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that two individuals – later confirmed as Rob Reiner, 78, and his spouse Michele, 68 – were declared deceased at the location.

Authorities stated that Nick Reiner was taken into custody several hours later, approximately 21:15 local time on Sunday. Investigators have not disclosed a motive and the inquiry is still in progress.

Nick Reiner has publicly discussed his challenges with addiction and homelessness. His experiences inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he collaborated on with his father in 2015.

The family’s residence is located in Brentwood, a lavish celebrity neighborhood filled with large homes, boutiques, and eateries. A security guard was stationed outside the house on Monday morning as media gathered at the front entrance.

Rob Reiner, the child of comedy legend Carl Reiner, started his career in the 1960s and gained fame portraying Meathead in the sitcom All in The Family.

He solidified his fame with the cult classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, which he directed and starred in.

Reiner was wed to Laverne & Shirley actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981, and he is the adoptive father of Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.

In 1989, he married Michele Reiner, whom he stated he met during the filming of the romantic comedy-drama When Harry Met Sally. The couple shares three children.

Michele Reiner was an actress, producer, and photographer, as well as the founder of Reiner Light, a photography and production company.

Rob Reiner was also recognized for his active political participation and support of Democratic candidates.

In response to their deaths, President Donald Trump labeled the situation as “very sad,” criticizing Reiner by claiming they “reportedly” passed away “because of the anger he incited in others through his persistent, unyielding, and incurable condition” known as “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“He was notorious for making people CRAZY with his feverish obsession with President Donald J. Trump,” wrote the president.

It remains unclear which reports the president referred to, and while the matter is being investigated as a homicide, police have not commented on any potential motive.

The term Trump Derangement Syndrome has frequently been employed by the president and his supporters to describe those critical of him. Reiner was a prominent critic of Trump.

Numerous Republicans condemned Trump for his post, including former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, who stated that the deaths represented a “family tragedy, not about politics or political foes.”

“Many families face struggles with a family member dealing with drug addiction and mental health concerns. It’s profoundly challenging and should be met with compassion, particularly when it culminates in murder,” she remarked.

Trump’s comments were also met with outrage from some friends of the Reiners.

Maria Shriver, the former first lady of California and a longtime friend of the couple, expressed in a post on X that they were “dedicated parents.”

“They loved their children deeply and never ceased in their efforts to support them,” she stated.

Sir Elton John, who made an appearance in Spinal Tap’s sequel this year, shared, “I cannot fathom today’s news about Rob and Michele.”

“They were among the most wonderful people I ever encountered, and they deserved so much more.”

Actor John Cusack, who featured in Reiner’s 1985 film The Sure Thing, referred to him as “a great man,” while Elijah Wood, who starred in the 1994 film North, expressed horror at the couple’s passing.
