Earlier in 2025, we honored Prime Day—the annual tribute to the finest Transformer of all, Optimus Prime (in fact, Optimus Prime is celebrated so much that we frequently mark Prime Day on two occasions!). However, as the fall season approaches with longer nights and cooler air, we take a moment to reflect on a much more poignant event: Black Friday, the day Optimus Prime was heartlessly slain by the deceitful hand of his nemesis Megatron while valiantly protecting Autobot City from an onslaught. Though Optimus Prime did not make it through the fierce battle, the resilient spirit of the Autobot leader nevertheless triumphed, and due to his decisive actions, the Decepticons were defeated, retreating from the city like the spineless machines they truly are and yielding the victory to the forces of good.
Even though the death of Optimus Prime was both tragic and unforeseen, it is often said that things are at their darkest just before the dawn—and so, while today is known as “Black Friday” to remind us of the day’s gravity, we opt to commemorate him in the same way we celebrate other significant historical figures who also sacrificed themselves for the cause of freedom: we take the day off to indulge in shopping!
