If you’re using an iPhone, the Apple Watch is the ideal smartwatch for you. However, there was only one Apple Watch at the time it was launched in 2015. Fast forward a decade, and you now have three options: the budget-friendly Watch SE, the regular Series, and the rugged Ultra. Each model caters to different audiences and requirements, but here’s the good news: I’ve evaluated every Apple Watch since the Series 2 and can guide you towards the best choice.

What we’re searching for

Our testing process for Apple Watches

Apple Watches offer a myriad of functions, from tracking your wellness and fitness to managing notifications. As with similar wearables, we employ a combination of year-round practical testing and benchmarks. While we might not intentionally fall down a staircase, we pay attention to whether accidentally stumbling during a walk triggers Fall Detection. (And if it doesn’t.) We also evaluate the precision of sleep tracking, heart rate, and GPS in comparison to established control devices like the Oura Ring or Garmin. Additionally, we analyze how the various Apple Watch versions stack up against each other concerning durability, functionality, and battery performance.

Who should consider this?

We won’t suggest the Apple Watch Ultra for someone who leads a sedentary lifestyle—unless the best possible battery longevity is what you seek. The goal is to help guide you toward the Apple Watch that best meets your needs.

Cost considerations

Should you purchase new? You can frequently find savings on an Apple Watch by opting for refurbished models, particularly since there aren’t usually many updates from year to year.

Feature comparison

Are you willing to spend extra for LTE capability? Which models offer specific sensors, and how does that apply to your needs?

Cellular vs. GPS

Some situations necessitate the need for cellular models, whereas others can be adequately served with just GPS.

The most suitable Apple Watch for the majority

9

Verge Score

Pros

  • Now includes an always-on display
  • Double tap and wrist flick features!
  • A plethora of additional health functionalities!
  • 5G compatible!
  • Rapid charging!
  • More robust build!
  • On-device Siri!
  • Improved processor
  • Also includes a speaker

Cons

  • Still has thick bezels
  • Could use slightly better battery life

Sizes: 40mm, 44mm / Weight: 26.3g (40mm), 32.9g (44mm) / Battery life: Up to 18 hours / Display type: Always-on LTPO OLED / GPS: Built-in GPS along with GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, Beidou / Connectivity: 5G (optional), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi / Water resistance: Up to 50 meters / Music storage: 64GB

The third-generation Apple Watch SE offers outstanding value. In fact, there’s hardly any distinction between this base model and the more sophisticated Series 11. It features an always-on display, the new S10 processor that supports gestures like double-tap and wrist flick, quick charging, built-in Siri, 5G cellular capability, and enhanced health features thanks to the new wrist-temperature sensor. For individuals in relatively good health, advanced health tracking like blood oxygen levels or EKGs for detecting afib may not be essential. The SE 3 still covers the fundamentals such as irregular heart rate alerts, the new Sleep Score, and notifications for sleep apnea.

Apart from health functionalities, the only genuine trade-off is in terms of aesthetics. The SE 3 has a broader bezel, and I wish battery performance were slightly better. Nevertheless, I felt no regret while testing this watch alongside the Series 11. And for a savings of $150? This is the Apple Watch that most individuals should consider purchasing.

Optimal Apple Watch for health monitoring

8

Verge Score

Pros

  • Improved battery life
  • 5G support
  • FDA-approved hypertension notifications

Cons

  • Not “bad,” but the most intriguing updates are found in watchOS 26, which is being rolled out to older models too

Sizes: 42mm, 46mm / Weight: 30.3g (42mm), 37.8 (46mm) / Battery life: Up to 24 hours, 38 in low-power mode / Display type: Always-on LTPO OLED / GPS: Integrated GPS, including GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, Beidou / Connectivity: 5G (optional), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi / Water resistance: Up to 50 meters / Music storage: 64GB

While I believe the SE 3 is the best option for most users, if health monitoring is your top priority, the Series 11 holds a slight advantage. It includes all the advanced sensors required for afib monitoring, and the larger battery is advantageous for those interested in tracking sleep and monitoring sleep apnea. Apple has also introduced FDA-cleared hypertension notifications which the SE 3 lacks. Its sleeker design and bigger screen are further reasons to recommend the Series 11 for anyone purchasing an Apple Watch for a parent.

However, if saving money is a priority, I advise looking for a Series 10 while supplies last. The Series 10 and 11 are nearly indistinguishable, with the main hardware improvements in the latter being 5G capability and a slight enhancement in battery life.

What about blood oxygen levels?

That said, the blood oxygen feature isn’t yet a crucial aspect on any wearable. Many devices provide spot functionality only or track your SpO2 levels passively overnight and yield a morning average. They cannot and should not serve as substitutes for fingertip pulse oximeters.

Best Apple Watch for athletes

8

Verge Score

Pros

  • Extended battery duration
  • Larger display with thinner bezels
  • Satellite and 5G functionalities

Cons

  • Most users might not notice the enhancements in 5G or satellite

Sizes: 42mm, 46mm / Weight: 30.3g (42mm), 37.8 (46mm) / Battery life: Up to 24 hours, 38 in low-power mode / Display type: Always-on LTPO OLED / GPS: Integrated GPS, including GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, Beidou / Connectivity: 5G (optional), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi / Water resistance: Up to 50 meters / Music storage: 64GB

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 might be overkill for everyday use. Its enhanced sturdiness, bright display, alarm system, and Action Button are designed for individuals leading active lifestyles. This means frequent outdoor adventures, running in nature, diving for fun, and similar activities. You need not be a professional athlete to appreciate the Ultra—many Tech Dads, for instance, love this watch for its extended battery life and larger screen. (Both of which are reasons I’ve also made the Ultra my primary watch for the past two years.) The black variant also boasts an attractive appearance.

Similar to the Series models, I’d suggest searching for Ultra 2 models on sale for a modest discount, as this year’s version had minor improvements. Also, if you own an Ultra 2 already, now isn’t the moment to upgrade. The exception would be if the new satellite connectivity intrigues you. I’ve taken numerous hikes in New Jersey without losing coverage, but if you’re in a more remote area where coverage is lacking, this is a reasonable justification to opt for the Ultra 3.
