Amazon announced on Monday its plans to invest up to $50 billion to enhance its capacity to deliver artificial intelligence and high-performance computing services to its cloud division’s U.S. government clientele.

The initiative is expected to commence in 2026 and will introduce approximately 1.3 gigawatts of capacity via new data centers tailored for federal entities, the organization stated in a blog post.

As a component of the investment, agencies will gain access to Amazon Web Services’ AI resources, including Anthropic‘s Claude model series and Nvidia chips, alongside Amazon’s specialized Trainium AI chips.

This initiative follows comparable announcements from Anthropic and Meta to widen AI data centers within the U.S. Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank revealed their Stargate collaboration in January, which is set to invest as much as $500 billion in AI infrastructure throughout the U.S. in the upcoming four years.

AWS stated this endeavor will allow agencies to craft tailored AI solutions, refine datasets, and “boost workforce efficiency.” AWS provides services to over 11,000 government bodies, according to Amazon’s announcement on Monday.

“This funding eliminates the technological obstacles that have hindered government progress and strengthens America’s position in leading the AI revolution,” declared AWS CEO Matt Garman in a statement.

Technology firms have allocated billions in a competitive effort to establish sufficient resources to support AI services. Amazon in October increased its projected spending for capital investments this year, indicating an expectation of $125 billion in expenditures for 2025, a rise from a previous forecast of $118 billion.
