Samsung is on the brink of unveiling additional information about its Project Moohan mixed reality headset. The company just revealed a new “Worlds Wide Open” Galaxy event slated for October 21st at 10PM ET, where it intends to disclose specifics about the device.

The headset will operate on Android XR, a fresh mixed reality platform created by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, and Samsung states that it is “engineered to adapt across various formats, placing AI at the heart of immersive, daily experiences.” My colleague Victoria Song had an initial opportunity to test the headset and Android XR in late 2024, and almost a year later, it appears Samsung is set for the complete launch of the headset.

“Project Moohan is the pioneering initial product designed for the open and scalable Android XR platform, seamlessly integrating everyday practicality with new immersive experiences,” Samsung proclaims. “This is where the genuine potential of XR is realized, unlocking entirely new realms of possibilities.”

The announcement occurs as Apple is reportedly nearing the launch of a new version of its Vision Pro headset that’s driven by a more powerful chip. A headset resembling an updated Vision Pro has also surfaced in FCC filings. However, Apple may be shifting its focus beyond headsets towards a new type of product; it has apparently paused its work on a lighter version of the Vision Pro to concentrate on the development of smart glasses instead.

Update, October 14th: Added information from Samsung.
