The renowned Italian supercar manufacturer unveiled the technology powering its highly awaited first electric vehicle, the Elettrica. During an event at its Maranello headquarters, Ferrari presented to journalists the chassis and powertrain of this upcoming EV, featuring its battery system and motors. However, no complete vehicle was disclosed.
Ferrari anticipates unveiling the fully assembled vehicle next year, though it has not yet determined a definitive name or design. (Elettrica may just be a temporary name, but it has the potential to become the official title.)
Various sources have speculated that the EV could be in the form of a shooting brake, wagon, or small SUV based on some camouflaged prototypes seen cruising around Italy. Nevertheless, Ferrari provided some vital details about its electric vehicle, including a top speed of 193 mph, a power output of up to 1000 horsepower in boost mode, and an impressive range of 329 miles on the more lenient WLTP testing cycle.
Rather than merely simulating engine sounds like many electric sports and muscle vehicles nowadays, Ferrari plans to enhance genuine vibrations from its powertrain to produce a unique sound. This is achieved by placing an accelerometer beneath the inverter to capture the motor’s vibrations, which are then transmitted through a “proprietary algorithm,” as indicated in Ferrari’s promotional materials.
For driving enthusiasts, there are numerous appealing features, including independent electric motors, rear-wheel steering, and a dynamic suspension system that completely removes the anti-roll bar. Featuring four doors and potentially more than four seats, this new electric vehicle may share more similarities with Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV than with other vehicles in its portfolio. This will mark the automaker’s first four-door model ever.
This electric vehicle is aimed at the new generation of affluent buyers, with reports suggesting that the Ferrari Elettrica will likely be priced at a minimum of €500,000 (approximately $580,400). The chassis will feature 75 percent recycled aluminum, while the fast-charging battery will be seamlessly integrated into the car’s floor to achieve a lower center of gravity.
The battery for the Elettrica consists of 15 modules integrating nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry, with a total energy capacity of 122 kWh, supplied by SK On. However, the assembly of the pack will be managed by Ferrari itself.
While the overall torque figure hasn’t been disclosed, it is stated that the vehicle will accelerate from 0-62 mph (100 kph) in just 2.5 seconds. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, Ferrari claims it can be charged at rates of up to 350 kW. Additionally, there will be a feature that simulates gear shifting while actually regulating the regenerative braking.
Like other performance car brands, Ferrari has been hesitant to fully embrace electrification. The brand has already postponed a second EV until 2028 due to insufficient market demand. Simultaneously, competitor Lamborghini has deferred its first electric car until 2029, citing unpredictable demand.
