Tokyo resident Kisara Okada was traversing the business hub, Marunouchi, en route to an osteopathy appointment last month when the long neck of a construction crane attracted her attention. “During the Meiji period, when the area transitioned from open fields, the inspiration was drawn from the streets of London,” Okada states. “Remnants of that past can still be found in the high-rise architecture. Currently, the region is in the midst of redevelopment, and I aimed to illustrate a part of that journey.”

Okada characterizes the focus of her street photography as “miraculous places that the city has disregarded.” The editing applied to this image was minimal. “I seek not to fabricate artistic beauty; instead, I wish to convey the subtle marvels present alongside our daily existence,” she remarks.

It was the first day back following the summer break, and the heat was oppressive, resulting in no one occupying the benches by the road, but she noticed a solitary worker. “Their job is demanding – they have to keep working regardless of the weather, but I believe he was nearing the end of his shift.”

Contemplating her photo now, she reflects, “I adore how one can uncover numerous layers within a single image and how nature intertwines with the artificial.”
